Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Matthew 11:28–29
Many of us come to God the way a nervous guest arrives at a grand house. We straighten our clothes at the door. We hide whatever looks shabby. We rehearse what we will say, and we half expect to be sent around to the back.
Jesus turns all of that upside down. He doesn’t say, Come to Me once you’ve sorted yourself out. He doesn’t say, Come when your faith is stronger, or when you’ve stopped doubting, or when you’ve had a better week. He says, Come, all you who are weary and burdened. The tired ones. The ones carrying too much. That is the whole of the qualification.
Perhaps you picked up this book because life is heavy right now. Perhaps it’s quieter than that. You believe in God, but you don’t feel that you really know Him. Or you used to pray and somewhere along the way you stopped, and you aren’t sure why. Any of these is a perfectly good place to begin.
And notice what He offers. Not a list of chores. Rest. He describes Himself as gentle and humble in heart. I have known a great many people in my long life, and I can tell you that the gentle ones are the ones you go back to. You go back because being near them does you good.
So for these thirty days I am not going to ask you to become a different person. I am going to ask you to come, a few minutes each day, just as you are, with whatever you are carrying. We will learn the rest along the way.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
I’m here. I’m not sure I know how to do this, but I’m here.
You know what I’m carrying today, better than I do.
Some of it I haven’t said out loud to anyone.
You said, Come to Me. So I’m coming,
not because I have it all together, but because I don’t.
Teach me over these days.
Be gentle with me, as You said You would be,
and help me learn to rest in You.
Amen.
A Small Step
Choose your time and place for these thirty days. It doesn’t need to be early or impressive. After the children leave for school, in the car before you walk into work, at the kitchen table after supper. Choose one, and tell God simply, “This is our time.”
To Carry With You
I don’t have to be ready. I only have to come.
